Alaska is the ultimate outdoor destination for adventurous families! It’s America’s final frontier – the great wilderness that has remained largely unaffected by the destructive onslaught of modernity. Journey this vast land cherished by its native peoples (Tlingit, Inuit, among many others) and see it much as the early explorers and prospectors saw it long ago, when they came in search of gold and great fortunes.

Cruise through the crisp waters of Alaska’s Western Coves aboard the M/V Wilderness Discoverer, passing glaciers and floating chunks of ice, lush temperate forests and abundant wildlife. After arriving in Ketchikan, we’ll pass through El Capitan Passage and hit the trails of Tongass National Forest – the largest national forest in the United States.

Explore the authentic Tlingit village of Klawock, marveling at the colorful totem poles and keeping an eye out for majestic eagles and other sea birds. Paddle skiffs and kayaks along the passages and shores of Chatham Strait and the secluded coves of Frederick Sound, watching for birds, wolves and bears.

Visit The Brothers, a pair of wildlife-rich, rocky islands by Stephen’s Passage, and see orca whales, sea lions and the largest concentration of humpback whales in the northern hemisphere. Admire the glowing blues and the booming sounds of calving ice at Dawes Glacier. And in Juneau, fly over a stunning icefield by helicopter and ride a dogsled across a snow-capped glacier. Your family visit to the Western Coves is sure to be a magical nature experience!

Price includes: Park entrance fees, accommodations, Port fees ($167), airport transfers, area specialists, all meals, Comprehensive Travel Insurance (a $200 - $300 value).

Day 1 – Flight to Ketchikan / Embark Wilderness Discoverer
Welcome aboard! Meet your crew, get settled in, and keep watch for eagles as we cruise through the Tongass Narrows out of Ketchikan.

Day 2 – El Capitan Passage / Tongass National Forest
Wake in El Capitan Passage, surrounded by breathtaking Tongass National Forest – the largest national forest in the United States. Take a hike through the wilds of Alaska, following an old logging trail winding through the high forest. Trek to El Capitan Cave, the largest known cave in Alaska and the largest mapped cave in the Americas. And if the timing of the tides is right, your family just may get lucky today and snag some organic oysters from a local grower.

Day 3 – Klawock Native Village
Discover living history in Klawock – one of the most authentic Tlingit villages in Alaska. Your family will learn the importance of carving, gaze up at totem poles coloring the town, and hear their stories. Visit the carvers’ shed, where the traditional indigenous art of carving and restoring totems is passed on. Along with its small fishing fleet, this quaint community continues to thrive on the farthest reaches of the wild Alaskan coastline. Explore the area on foot, keeping an eye out for eagles and sea birds.

Day 4 – Chatham Strait
Explore the intricate passages and shores along Chatham Strait’s Kuiu or Baranof Islands. Conditions permitting, your family will join your expedition team on the water by kayak or skiff. You’ll have the option to snorkel; hidden beneath the surface lies a magical array of sea life that can only be seen by really going under and exploring. Take a deep breath and go for it! Your family’s aquatic discoveries today will be within some of the most untouched wilderness of the Tongass National Forest.

Day 5 – Frederick Sound
Lush forest, spectacular views, wildlife and family fun are all in abundance in Frederick Sound. Keep watch along the coastline for birds, wolves and black bears. With many secluded coves to choose from, you may slip into the waters of Deep Cove, Patterson Bay, Saginaw Bay, or perhaps another hidden gem to explore by skiff or kayak. Gear up for snorkeling or a guided hike.

Day 6 – Stephen’s Passage and the Brothers
Today will be packed with plenty of family wildlife viewing. The Brothers, a pair of tiny, rocky islands at the confluence of Stephen’s Passage and Frederick Sound, are home to some of the most abundant wildlife in all of Alaska, which is certainly saying something! The area is the summer feeding ground for the largest concentration of humpback whales in the northern hemisphere. Keep watch for frolicking orca (think Free Willy), humpbacks, and sea lions. Tonight, anchor in a quiet bay and listen to sounds of the magnificent wilderness all around you.

Day 7 – Endicott Arm and Ford’s Terror Wilderness
Snow covered mountains, glowing shades of blue, and the bellowing thunder of calving ice will take your family’s breath away at the face of Dawes Glacier. As you glide through Endicott Arm, you’ll likely find a few seal taking respite on the glacier’s smaller “bergy bits,’ or floating chunks of ice. Tides permitting, explore the narrow passage of Ford’s Terror and admire the majestic domes, hanging valleys and pristine Pacific northwestern wilderness that surround it. Join the captain for a farewell toast during dinner.

Day 8 – Juneau / Disembark
Bid adieu to newfound friends over breakfast before disembarking the ship. Transfer directly to Juneau’s airport.

Day 9 – Depart Juneau
